Choosing A Portable Sink For Your Concession Stand

Choosing a Portable Sink for Your Concession Stand
If you’ve decided to jump on the concession stand bandwagon, you’ll need to outfit your stand with a portable hand washing sink. Aside from the fact that a portable sink is very useful, it’s also very likely to be an absolute requirement in order to serve food, per your regional health department. Portable sinks can be a significant investment, especially for those who are just starting out. Here are some of the things you should keep in mind when choosing your portable sink:
1. Outdoor, Indoor, or Both?
If your concession is completely self-contained, an indoor portable sink might be just fine. If it’s not, an outdoor portable sink may be better. Indoor sinks tend to be a bit more attractive, but a lot less rugged. Of course, there are also sturdy indoor sinks and appealing outdoor ones. If it’s important that you have both qualities, shop very carefully. Find a seller that knows the brands they sell very well.
2. Hot or Not?
Whether or not you need hot water might not be up to you—check your health department regulations. If it is up to you, consider getting a hot water sink, anyway, since it conforms to health and safety regulations for proper hand washing.
3. Who will be using it?
If the sink is for use strictly by yourself and your employees, there are a lot of factors you might not care about. If it’s for customers to use as well, you might want to put some more consideration in to the sink’s appearance, height, accessibility, and sturdiness.

Choosing a Portable Sink Seller
It’s just as important to choose a good portable sink vendor as it is to choose a good portable sink. You should choose a seller that can help you choose the right sink. You’ll know that they’re able to do that, because they’ll ask you pertinent questions about your needs, and they’ll show you sinks that meet those needs. A great seller concentrates more on customer service than trying to pressure you into a sale. They’ll be happy to answer as many questions as you have, and to explain anything you need to have explained.
You’ll want to choose a seller that carries high quality brands, as well. Even inexpensive portable sinks are an investment, so you want to buy one that’s going to last. The brands a seller stocks reflects on them as well. Inquire about warranties. Is there a manufacturer’s warranty? Do the sellers offer theirs as well? If the seller doesn’t mention this, ask them.
Finally, does it seem like the seller has a good grasp on the regulations which food service portable sinks must comply with? It can be helpful to have an informative discussion with your seller to make sure that the products conforms to the applicable regulations. This way you can reduce the chances of not getting the sign-off from your health and safety inspector when they come to inspect your facility. PortableSinks4Less.com takes pride in providing our customers with the highest quality of portable sink as well as excellent customer service.

Camping: A Great Place for an Outdoor Portable Sink

Going camping doesn’t have to mean being inconvenienced every second. In fact, it can be a luxurious experience, if you bring the right camping gear.

A mobile cooking station can do nearly anything that your stovetop can, so why not bring along a few pots and pans and make some real food? And if you’re going to do that, bring a folding table and a few chairs. There’s no reason to try to balance your plates on your knees while you get smoke in your eyes at the campfire. A disposable tablecloth is a nice addition, too.

For a good night sleep, you can have an air mattress and avoid sleeping on the ground, too. Just make sure that your combination is good and stable; the last thing you need is to go sliding out of bed in the middle of the night.
You can also bring a bathroom along. The good news is that there are convenient, innovative gadgets designed to cover just about everything your bathroom does (except flush, of course). You can get a portable toilet, which saves you from the indignity of squatting. There’s nothing whatsoever luxurious about squatting, after all.

An outdoor portable sink is another must-have. You have no idea how many times you’re going to want to wash your hands while camping. Outdoor portable sinks do not need any plumbing. There are self-contained units with fresh water and waste water tanks located conveniently in the sink cabinet. The foot pump model features cold water and there is no need for electricity. Some outdoor portable sinks, like the Ozark River Portable Sink, require an 110V outlet and then you just plug in and you get instant hot water! With large fresh water and waste water tanks, you can get approximately 40 15-second hand washings from these portable sinks. Outdoor portable sinks really enhance the outdoor camping experience!

Mom always said to wash your hands before you eat!

Children typically don’t like to take the time to wash their hands. If they do wash their hands, it is usually hurried and not thorough. There are ways to help children learn to wash their hands properly. Young children, toddlers and preschool age children, learn through their senses: touching, seeing, hearing, tasting and smelling. Because germs can’t be seen, felt, tasted or heard, making them tangible through play is a great way to teach the importance of proper hand washing. Some tips include singing hand washing songs, drawing and coloring pictures about hand washing and telling stories about washing and germs.

Of course, one of the most important tips is to have a hand washing source readily available for the children. A portable sink, such as the Ozark River Lil Premier, child-height portable sink, can be placed conveniently near the children’s play area for ease of hand washing after play time. The Ozark River Lil Premier is just the right height for young children to turn on the faucets and use the sink without adult assistance. Soap dispenser is also easily within a child’s reach. No need for a step stool! Hand washing is right where you want it!

Mobile Health Care Centers and our Ozark River Portable Sinks

Many communities across the United States are very focused on improving the overall health of their community. One of the most important areas to reflect increased attention is to provide mobile health care centers for the community, to bring healthcare services directly to neighborhoods and schools. Some of the services that these mobile health care centers might include physical examinations, vision and hearing screenings, and immunizations.

One vital element of these mobile health care centers includes providing a sanitary hand-washing experience for the medial professionals as well as for their patients. Our Ozark River Portable Sinks can be found on many mobile health care centers across the United States. Our Ozark River Premier Portable Hot Water Sinks features instant hot water technology and the water pump meets UL, CSA and NSF standards. The units are on wheels for easy mobility and have two front locking casters. No drain is needed and no plumbing is required. Just add water, plug in and turn on.

How Hot Does The Water Get In Our Ozark River Portable Sinks?

All of our Ozark River Portable Sinks feature an on-demand water heater. This means that you get instant hot water as you would with a traditional sink, hooked up to stationary plumbing. These portable hand washing units allow hot water hand washing where hard plumbing is not available or an less expensive alternative is sought.

The FDA recommends washing dishes at 110 degrees as one of the steps to get ride of harmful bacteria. Our Ozark River Portable Sinks all feature a scald-guard that will not allow the water temperature to exceed 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The normal temperature range for the heater is a safe 105-120 degrees Fahrenheit — perfect for hand washing. Temperature mixing is achieved by normal operation of the hot and cold handles, just like a standard sink.

We also offer Ozark River’s EZ-Flow Hands-Free Faucet which can be attached to our Ozark River Portable Sinks for a hands-free hand washing experience. The EZ-Flow Hands-Free Faucet is great for use with diaper changing stations, food preparation areas or anywhere hands-free operation would be preferable. It comes with an override switch so that you can also turn the water on or off manually if you do not wish to use the sensor unit.

What is NSF Certification?

Founded in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation, the NSF changed its name to NSF International in 1990 as they expended their services beyond sanitation. The letters in the organization’s name do not represent any specific words today. The NSF develops public health standards and certification programs that help protect the world’s food, water, consumer products and the environment. The NSF is an independent, accredited organization that helps establish public health standards and test and certify products to make sure that they conform to these standards.

Recognized by regulatory agencies at the local, state, federal and international level, NSF certification demonstrates that a product complies with all standard requirements. NSF conducts periodic facility audits and product testing to verify that the product continues to comply with the standard.

All of our Ozark River Portable Sinks, except for Ozark River’s Kiddie Station, are NSF certified and comply with the rigid guidelines set by local regulatory agencies. Ozark River Portable Sinks meet the requirements of the applicable national standard – health officials for product compliance of sanitation codes fully recognize this certification both nationally and internationally. Ozark River Portable Sinks are recognized and endorsed by health and safety agencies around the country for meeting hand washing code requirements. For example, Ozark River’s Advantage Series, which features a large laminate countertop and high quality maple grain vinyl laminate cabinet features NSF certification as well as ADA compliant long faucet handles and is available in a single, double or triple basin unit.

If you plan on using your portable sink for any purpose that needs to conform to regulatory standards, make sure to look for the NSF certification on the portable sink that you select.

How Safe are Your Food Carts?

Outdoor catering can take place at a range of different events. Especially during the summer months, temporary and seasonal food carts are extremely popular. It is extremely important that as an owner of a food cart or temporary food facility, you make certain that you follow health guidelines and regulations.

Proper utensil washing and hand washing are critical to ensure a safe and healthy environment for you and your customers. Temporary food facilities with food preparation generally require three 5- gallon containers for the cleaning of equipment, utensils and for general cleaning purposes. One container usually contains soapy water, the second contains clean rinse water, and the third a bleach-water solution (use 1 tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water). Our Monsam Portable Sink with Triple Stainless Basin, NS-003, comes with one-5 gallon fresh water tank and one 8-gallon waste water tank plus an additional set of water tank. It is equipped with an adjustable heater than can be set from 95 degrees Fahrenheit to 155 degrees Fahrenheit. The triple basin works perfectly for proper utensil washing.

There should also be an appropriate sink for hand washing. Proper hand washing facilities should provide a 5-gallon water container with fresh water, a waste water container, a soap dispenser and paper towels for hand washing within the food booth. Food handlers have to wash their hands with soap and water prior to the start of their food preparation activities and, most especially, after visiting the restroom and after smoking. For example, our Ozark River Outdoor Portable Sink Model NSSTK-SS-SS1N, requires no plumbing. Its weather resistant cabinet is made from a high density polyethylene front and galvanized steel sides. It comes with a 5-gallon fresh water tank and a 6-gallon waste water tank. Its components meet all FDA, NSF, UL and CSA approvals or listings.

Let’s have a safe, healthy and fun summer!

The Importance of Proper Handwashing in a Day Care Setting

Proper hand washing in a child care setting is the single most important line of defense in preventing the transmission of disease-causing organisms. Keeping the environment free of bacteria helps keep your employees healthy and ready to come to work. It also lowers the risk of cross-contamination between the children, reducing the number of sick children.

When Should Hands be Washed? Child care staff should ideally wash their hands upon arrival at the child care center. Hands should always be washing before handling food, preparing bottles or feeding children and before handling any utensils or equipment. Child care staff should be cognizant to wash their hands after assisting a child in using the toilet or changing diapers. It is also important to wash hands after removing disposable gloves. Ozark River’s Lil Premier Portable Sink is child-height and provides instant scald-free hot water to facilitate proper hand washing for both adults and children.

Children should also be encouraged to wash their hands upon arrival at the child care center. This ensures that any germs they may have picked up on their way into the center are eliminated. They should wash their hands after a visit to the toilet and after each diaper change. When the children return from the playground and, before and after a water activity, hand washing should be strongly encouraged. Playground equipment almost never gets cleaned and harmful germs — such as mucus that kids wipe from their noses — can linger for days. Sandboxes are also a haven for germs and it is very important to wash children’s hands after they play in the sandbox. Ozark River’s Lil Premier Portable Sink doesn’t need any plumbing but can simply be set up in a convenient place in the classroom so that it’s close by when hand washing is necessary. If the sink is close by, it increases the odds that children will use it. All you need is an outlet — to plug in the sink and you are ready to go! Let’s keep those germs far away!

Why Sanitize with Steramine?

In today’s environment, it is more important than ever to make sure that you keep your portable sink free from bacteria and odor causing germs.  It is vital to maintain the health and well being of your employees, customers and/or patients.  One of the simplest ways to maintain a sanitized portable sink is by using a Steramine solution.  Tested and evaluated under strict EPA protocols, Steramine has been recognized as being an effective agent in killing not only infectious bacteria but HIV-1 (AIDS) virus as well.  Unlike concentrated chlorine, Steramine is stain-free with a fresh clean smell.

The process is quite simple.  Take one pre-measured Steramine packet and mix in either cold or warm water.  There is no waiting or guessing as to exact measurements.  It safely cleans the inside plumbing of our Ozark River and Monsam portable sinks.  If you are just getting started, you might want to use the convenient Starter Kit that includes everything you need — 10 one-ounce Steramine packets, 5-gallon container with spigot, spray bottle and express pack.
